Searching for nova shells around cataclysmic variables – II. A second campaign

نویسندگان

چکیده

ABSTRACT We report on our second campaign to search for old nova shells around cataclysmic variables (CVs). Our aim was test the theory that eruptions cause cycles in mass transfer rates of CVs. These change behaviour CVs during their intereruption periods. examined Hα images 47 objects and found no new any targets. Combining latest results with those previous (Sahman et al.), searches by Schmidtobreick al. Pagnotta & Zurek, we estimate nova-like phase cycle lasts ∼3000 yr.

Modelling Population II Cataclysmic Variables

We study the long–term evolution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) as a function of the companion star metallicity. It is shown that CVs with secondaries of low metallicity (Z=10−4) which belong to population II (PopII CVs) pass through a detached phase with a smaller period width, a shorter minimum period, and display a slightly higher mass transfer rate, resulting in shorter evolutionary timesca...

Dwarf Nova Oscillations and Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables: II. A Low Inertia Magnetic Accretor Model

The Dwarf Nova Oscillations observed in Cataclysmic Variable (CV) stars are interpreted in the context of a Low Inertia Accretor model, in which accretion on to an equatorial belt of the white dwarf primary causes the belt to vary its angular velocity. The rapid deceleration phase is attributed to propellering. Evidence that temporary expulsion rather than accretion of gas occurs during this ph...

Cataclysmic variables

Cataclysmic variables are binary stars in which a relatively normal star is transferring mass to its compact companion. This interaction gives rise to a rich range of behaviour, of which the most noticeable are the outbursts that give the class its name. Novae belong to the class, as do the less well known dwarf novae and magnetic systems. Novae draw their energy from nuclear reactions, while d...

Study of nova shells

We present Hα direct imaging and shell spectroscopic observations of two classical novae: FH Ser 1970 and QU Vul 1984. The distances, reddenings, luminosities at maximum, and the mass of the shell ejected by FH Ser are derived and discussed.

Infrared Spectroscopy of Cataclysmic Variables -ii. Intermediate Polars

We present infrared (0.97{2.45 micron) spectra of the intermediate polars PQ Gem (RE0751+14), BG CMi and EX Hya. The spectra show strong Paschen, Brackett and He I emission lines from the accretion disc/stream. The infrared continua of PQ Gem and BG CMi can be represented by blackbodies of temperatures 4500 K and 5100 K, respectively, or by power-laws of the form f / 0:6;0:9 , respectively, and...
